A necklace for your dog's or cat's ashes

A small amount of your dog's or cat's ashes, or a little of their fur, can be carried in a Kavacha. Which designs have the most room inside, and how to fill one.

A Kavacha is an amulet necklace that opens by hand to a private chamber, and it can hold a small amount of a dog's or cat's ashes, or a little of their fur. Kavacha Designs | Sacred Armor™ makes each one in 925 sterling silver, and most designs also to order in 14K or 18K yellow gold. This guide covers which designs have the most room and how to fill one.

Ashes or fur

Some people keep a small amount of ashes, and some keep a little fur. A lock of hair or fur, coiled or folded, fits in every Kavacha chamber. Jayashri Triolo, who designs every Kavacha, has kept hair from her horse's mane in hers. For ashes, a larger chamber with a wider opening is easier to fill.

The designs with the most room

Measured from the design files with the cap closed, the largest chambers are:

  • Kerala Large: about 3.7 ml inside, opening about 12 mm.
  • Pankaj: about 3.6 ml inside, opening about 11 mm.
  • Vana: about 1.7 ml inside.
  • Agraja: about 1.5 ml inside, opening about 9 to 10 mm.

A real fill is somewhat less, because you leave room for the cap to close. Ashes are a coarse powder, so these figures are a guide, not a promise of weight. For fur alone, any design works, including the slim Capsule Small. Chamber sizes lists every design.

Filling it

Fill it at a table in a dry room, a little at a time, and close the cap by hand. Never glue the cap. Please contact us before you fill a Kavacha with ashes. Keeping a loved one's ashes close has the full steps.

Wearing it

Water resistance has not been tested, so take your Kavacha off before swimming or bathing, and keep it dry. Once ashes are inside it is not meant to be opened often, although it can be reopened when you need to. Every Kavacha comes empty, and what goes inside is yours.
