Shakti is spiritual energy, goddess energy. This Kavacha pays homage to feminine divinity and spiritual power, and its patterning comes from traditional Indian block printing; Jayashri collected the carved wooden handheld blocks themselves. Open it and there is a private chamber for a written prayer, a lock of hair or a small amount of ashes. Each piece begins as Jayashri's pen-and-ink drawing and is cast from its own single 3D print: one print, one cast.

What it holds

  • Prayer

    A written prayer.

  • Ashes

    A small amount of ashes.

  • Hair

    A lock of hair.

A secure twist-lock closure. The precisely fitted male and female parts align and twist together, and a silicone seal makes the fit snug. The end cap is held on the chain by its bail, so even when the amulet is open, the cap stays attached and cannot slip past the clasp.

A historic form, reimagined

The story

Named for feminine creative power, Shakti reimagines the enduring presence of historic Indian amulet forms as a refined contemporary necklace. Its sculptural patterning carries a sense of tradition without reproducing an antique piece.

Shakti has a balanced scale that is neither large nor small. Its feminine character and clean, wearable form allow it to stand on its own or layer naturally with other jewelry.

I am taking forms that have endured for generations and bringing them forward as something modern, beautifully made, and meant to last. Shakti carries the strength and presence of older Indian amulet traditions while becoming distinctly its own.

Jayashri Triolo, maker

Shakti is intended to be worn now and carried forward. Its refined scale, lasting materials, and openable form make it a personal object that can move through different chapters of a life.

Where the design comes from

Indian block printing

Traditional Indian block printing, believed to date back to at least the 12th century. The patterns are found on cloth, wallpaper, cards and tapestries used as bed coverings.

Jayashri collected the carved wooden handheld printing blocks themselves.

How it is made

  1. Jayashri draws each design by hand: a pen-and-ink storyboard, inspired by pieces she has collected for over forty years from all over the world.
  2. A 3D model is built from her drawing, and she reviews it for scale and for fidelity to the drawing before anything is cast.
  3. A single 3D print is made for each piece.
  4. One cast is taken from that one print: the metal is poured, not bent from sheet metal. This is not the traditional method where one mold yields hundreds of pieces: every piece is one print, one cast.
  5. The stones are set, and the piece is finished, polished or antiqued, and hallmarked.

Care

Sterling silver naturally develops a patina and may tarnish over time. This is normal. The darkened details in the recesses are intentional and part of the piece. To restore its shine, gently wipe the exterior with a soft silver polishing cloth, keeping to the raised surfaces. For additional cleaning, use a soft cloth dampened with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild dish soap. Wipe clean and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Please do not use silver dips or polishing pastes, which remove the darkened finish.

Remove your Kavacha before swimming, bathing, hot tubs or saunas, or using strong chemicals, and put on perfume, lotion and sunscreen first. Water resistance has not been tested, so do not treat the piece as watertight. Keep the chamber and anything inside it completely dry, and twist the cap closed by hand until the silicone seal fits snug. Once ashes or another irreplaceable trace are inside, the piece is not meant to be opened and closed casually or repeatedly, although it can be reopened when necessary. Questions

About the Shakti necklace in sterling silver

What fits inside a Shakti?

The chamber suits a single line or a name, written small on thin paper and rolled.

What would I write?

A line of scripture, a mantra, or a prayer in your own words. Some people write down a vow or an intention, so it stays with them. Others keep a few words in someone's handwriting.

Does it come with anything inside?

No. Your Shakti comes empty, and what it holds is your choice. Nothing on the outside shows what you placed in it. Our guide What you can keep inside an openable necklace has more ideas.

Shipping and returns

What will you hold in your Kavacha?

Now and then I write about what people carry, and why.
