Narashimha was the first Kavacha. Before Jayashri made it, she asked her spiritual teacher for his blessing to design and create these amulets, and this piece set the tone for everything that followed. It is named for Narasimha, the protector, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu who came as half man, half lion to restore peace and righteousness. Inside is a private chamber for a written prayer, a lock of hair or a small amount of ashes. Each piece begins as Jayashri's pen-and-ink drawing and is cast from its own single 3D print: one print, one cast.

A secure twist-lock closure. The precisely fitted male and female parts align and twist together, and a silicone seal makes the fit snug. The end cap is held on the chain by its bail, so even when the amulet is open, the cap stays attached and cannot slip past the clasp.

The first Kavacha

The story

Narashimha is the cornerstone of the collection and the first piece Jayashri made. It is named for Narasimha, the protector, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who came to Earth as half man, half lion in the Krita Yuga, the Golden Age, to restore peace and righteousness.

Narashimha is built to be handed down because of what it is made from, the ritual and love poured into it, and because it is worn. A Kavacha is not only a beautiful piece of jewelry; it is an altarpiece for your body, your temple.

How it is made

Jayashri draws each design by hand: a pen-and-ink storyboard, inspired by pieces she has collected for over forty years from all over the world.
A 3D model is built from her drawing, and she reviews it for scale and for fidelity to the drawing before anything is cast.
A single 3D print is made for each piece.
One cast is taken from that one print: the metal is poured, not bent from sheet metal. This is not the traditional method where one mold yields hundreds of pieces: every piece is one print, one cast.
The stones are set, and the piece is finished, polished or antiqued, and hallmarked.

Reviews

Sterling silver naturally develops a patina and may tarnish over time. This is normal. The darkened details in the recesses are intentional and part of the piece. To restore its shine, gently wipe the exterior with a soft silver polishing cloth, keeping to the raised surfaces. For additional cleaning, use a soft cloth dampened with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild dish soap. Wipe clean and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Please do not use silver dips or polishing pastes, which remove the darkened finish.

Remove your Kavacha before swimming, bathing, hot tubs or saunas, or using strong chemicals, and put on perfume, lotion and sunscreen first. Water resistance has not been tested, so do not treat the piece as watertight. Keep the chamber and anything inside it completely dry, and twist the cap closed by hand until the silicone seal fits snug. Once ashes or another irreplaceable trace are inside, the piece is not meant to be opened and closed casually or repeatedly, although it can be reopened when necessary. About the Narasimha necklace

What is the story of Narasimha?

The demon Hiranyakashipu won a boon from Brahma. He could not be killed by human or animal, inside or outside, by day or by night. His son Prahlada was a devotee of Vishnu. Vishnu came out of a stone pillar as a man-lion and slew the demon at dusk, on the threshold. The Srimad Bhagavatam tells the story at length in its seventh canto.

What is a Narasimha kavacha?

It can be a prayer or an amulet. The prayer is a hymn to Narasimha, traditionally attributed to the Brahmanda Purana and said to have been first spoken by Prahlada. The name is also used for amulets dedicated to Narasimha. More in our guide What is a kavach?

Does it come with a mantra inside?
